Searching for places to eat around Huntingdon?

In Huntingdon there are the usual High Street places to eat like Pizza Express, the local curry house or a hotel. There are also several High Street pubs that serve food but in our opinion some of the best places to eat around Huntingdon are out of the town itself.

The photo above is taken near to the Old Mill at Brampton which is just passed Huntingdon train station on your way to Brampton, not only is this a great place to eat close to Huntingdon it is also on the River.

Driving the other way from Huntingdon, over the river bridge into Godmanchester you can turn right at the roundabout, follow the Causeway along the river then follow the road passed the butchers and end up here at The Exhibition.

Other places we’d recommend to eat around Huntingdon include The Pheasant at Keyston, owned by the same group that own The Bridge Hotel in Huntingdon but a thatched pub set in a very pretty village. You could also try The Bell at Stilton, half way up the A1 between Huntingdon & Peterborough.

Pubs with open fires in Huntingdonshire

There are a few pubs now in and around Huntingdon with open fires. They seem to have come back in fashion.

At The Exhibition in Godmanchester, 2 miles from Huntingdon we have an open fire as soon as the temperature drops and the nights draw in. It is a great focal point in our bar area.

The Old Bridge Hotel in Huntingdon often have their fire going as does The Mill at Brampton. There is a small fire in the bar at The Axe & Compass in Hemingford and The Pheasant out at Keyston has open fires in a beautiful old thatched pub.

Huntingdon Restaurants – Where is your favourite?

When you are looking for a restaurant what is important to you?

Whilst we were trying to write about our restaurant we fell into the trap of boasting about the best food, the nicest atmosphere, the best service, the most fabulous menus, great prices, good value and all the other stuff every biased owner of a restaurant would use.

We have a review page on our website and do well on TripAdvisor but you can’t please everybody. We work hard to ensure that The Exhibition is a great choice of Restaurant in the Huntingdon area.

We have just had the front of the building restored and the terrace at the front all replaced. We decorate the restaurant and bar every year to change the atmosphere for regulars and to keep it clean & fresh for everyone. We alter our menus with the seasons so there is always something new to tempt you.

When we visit other restaurants in Huntingdon we are always comparing with ours, some are very good and serve great food, some we find expensive, some are a little snooty and some not that individual but on the whole Huntingdon and the surrounding villages has some great pub/restaurants or Gastro Pubs. Funnily enough on TripAdvisor the restaurant currently ranked #1 in Huntingdon is a Thai take-away on an industrial estate.

The Pheasant at Keyston is at #2 and it is a beautiful pub in a very pretty village. It featured on one of Gordon Ramsey’s TV shows but since then has become part of the Huntsbridge group again, the same people that run the Old Bridge Hotel & Restaurant in Huntingdon which is ranked #3.

#4 is a pie shop? #5 is The Dragoon pub in Brampton that was closed last time I drove past. #6 is The Crown at Broughton which deserves to be higher up, great restaurant and one of our favourites. Pop Bellies on Huntingdon High Street is at #7 then The Darjeeling Indian Restaurant is at #8  before you find The Exhibition currently at #9.

TripAdvisor lists 57 Huntingdon Restaurants and as you will see, some are shops and others, cafes, chippy’s and takeaways but not a bad list to work your way through!

Why are we called The Exhibition?

The Exhibition Pub & Restaurant was first licensed to sell alcohol in the early 1850’s and we are named after the Great Exhibition which was opened on this day, May 1st in 1851.

Read all about The Great Exhibition below

The following text has been taken from www.thegreatexhibition2012.co.uk/history-of-the-great-exhibition-2012

The Great Exhibition of 1851 was one of the great success stories of the nineteenth century. The idea of holding an international world fair was first suggested by the Society of Arts (now the Royal Society of Arts) in 1845. Their president, Prince Albert, was very enthusiastic but eventually he decided that it should not be organised by the Society. Consequently in 1850 he established a Royal Commission to organise the event, with himself as President.

The exhibition was opened on 1st May 1851 by Queen Victoria in Joseph Paxton’s purpose built “Crystal Palace” in Hyde Park, London. It was the first International World Fair and it grabbed the imagination of the whole country and beyond. During the one hundred and forty one days that the Exhibition was open it was visited by over six million people from all walks of life. There were nearly 14,000 exhibitors from all over the world and more than 100,000 exhibits were shown ranging from raw materials to machines, sculptures, hardware, musical instruments, cloth, pottery, glass etc.

The Great Exhibition saw the development of patent law, the tourist industry and the modern museum as well as encouraging trade and manufacturing. It was so successful financially that the profits were used to purchase a large site in South Kensington, now home to three national museums, Imperial College and the Royal Albert Hall as well as other institutions. The Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 still exists to manage its estate and to distribute the profits on its investments in order to “increase the means of industrial education and extend the influence of science and art upon productive industry.”

These 6 million visitors represented nearly a fifth of the British population at that time and is still considered today to be the founding vision of a truly “great exhibition”
